Fleas, Ticks, Mosquitos OH MY!
What flea-tick-mosquito prevention are you using?
We have some great options for whatever works for your pet! The preventatives we recommend are all topical. Unfortunately, pets can have an allergic reaction to oral preventatives. If a pet has a reaction to a topical medication, it is simple to wash the product off the skin. Oral flea medications work into your pet's bloodstream, reactions are much more difficult to eliminate, and the fleas or ticks must bite your furry friend to ingest the prevention. |
What is a Distemper Vaccine?
The vet staff recommends it is administered every year, but what is it?
A Distemper vaccine, also referred to as a DAP, 5-Way vaccine, DHPP or DHLPP is an injection given to dogs from the time they are a puppy and into their adult years. Think of it as an "all-in-one" vaccine, instead of going to the doctor and having separate vaccines for flu, Corona Virus, Chicken Pox, etc., it is just one! Some dogs may be a candidate for Leptospirosis added into their Distemper vaccine. Leptospirosis is caused by a bacteria found in water sources such as rivers, ponds, etc. |

Here are some ways to keep your pet healthy for the New Year!
- Keep them up to date on their vaccinations. The vaccines we carry have been hand-picked by our veterinarians in clinic determined by safety and effectiveness.
- Parasite Prevention. This includes heartworms and fleas! In Georgia, it does not get cold enough during our winters to kill off fleas or mosquitoes. We recommend year-round protection using Heartgard or Interceptor for heartworms in dogs and Frontline or Seresto collars for both cats and dogs.
- Do your health journey together! Our pet's need to stay "trim" too! Make sure their diets are appropriate, including treats! Start giving your pup a long walk once a day or make sure your kitty is getting enough play time with toys or scratching posts.
A Feast for Your Pet!
Thanksgiving is around the corner! Did you know that your pets can enjoy the feast too?

UPDATED COVID19 GUIDELINES
We've updated some of our COVID19 guidelines at the clinic! While still practicing safe protocol, we are trying our best to make it a great experience for you and your pet's.
Masks are optional now for clients and our staff. We want to make sure that you feel comfortable in our clinic. We are still trying our best to keep a comfortable distance to ensure your health and ours.
We are proud to say we have never had to do curbside appointments! Our exam rooms are still open! This includes allowing multiple healthy family members into appointments. We do ask that the amount of people in the room are at a minimum due to the exam room sizes and to ensure a safe distance.
What to expect at your pet's appointment
If you are comfortable doing so, go ahead and come inside and we will direct you and your pet to an exam room.
Our technicians will come into the room shortly to discuss the appointment and any concerns you may have for your pet, then bring them into our Treatment area to be examined. The doctor will come back into the exam room to discuss your pet and any treatment options.
Payment can be handled in two different ways!

If you are still not comfortable with coming inside to pick up items, we can take payment over the phone and have it out for curbside pickup.
We hope our new guidelines make you feel comfortable and safe while providing the best possible care for your pet's!

It's not an understatement to say it has been extremely hot this summer in Georgia, not only are we uncomfortable outside but our pets need relief from the heat too!
- DO NOT leave your pet in a car! In just 2 minutes the inside of a vehicle can increase 10 DEGREES!
- LIMIT outdoor time when hot! If you are hot, they are even hotter! Standing in a fur coat outside in the middle of a Georgia summer is RUFF! Give your pet lots of water to stay hydrated and limit walks to cooler temperatures such as early morning or late evening.
- HOT FEET! The pavement is SUPER hot during the summers and can reach up to 125 DEGREES! If you are unsure whether to walk your pet on the pavement, check with your hand or bare foot to determine comfortability first!
- FLEAS AND TICK SEASON! Are ALL your pets on a Flea & Tick preventative? Prevention should be given YEAR ROUND in Georgia. Fleas can cause your pet to itch and possibly contract Tapeworms. Ticks carry diseases that are harmful to you and your pets.

COVID Information
To The Friends and Family of Killian Hill Animal Hospital,
WE ARE STILL OPEN!
Following CDC recommendations, we will be doing our part in taking precautionary measures in protecting our community and staff. At this time, the CDC reports, "We do not have any evidence that companion animals, including pets, can spread COVID-19".
With this in mind we want you to know, WE ARE HERE. We will remain open to assist you with your veterinary needs. For the protection of our clients and staff, Killian Hill Animal Hospital will be taking precautions regarding the human attached to the other end of the leash or cat carrier. As always we will continue to diligently keep our hospital clean and sanitized while following some additional guidelines recommended by the CDC. We have also implemented some helpful suggestions and services to help maintain social distancing. With schools closed, we understand that not all families can adhere, but if possible, we ask that only ONE healthy authorized adult accompany the patient to the examination/appointment.
Many persons with COVID-19 may experience mild symptoms such as cough and a runny nose without a fever. We ask that you use caution when deciding whether or not to bring in your pet. Please reach out to us by phone or email if you feel that you should not enter our hospital. While emailed pictures and videos of your pet's symptoms do not replace an actual physical exam, we will try to help our clients with their fur babies in this manner if the situation seems necessary. We will be offering "Curb-Side" pick up for food and medications. Please let our receptionist know if you would like to take advantage of this service. Please call ahead for prescription refills so that we can everything ready for you to pick up to enhance social distancing.
Please give as much information as possible regarding your pet's symptoms and your appointment expectations when you are calling our receptionist to make the appointment. Also, let us know at that time if you need any medications or food. This will help limit the amount of close interaction time in our exam rooms.
We ask that everyone do their best in adhering to social distancing while visiting the hospital. Our lobby and exam rooms are not large.
Please be kind to your neighbor and keep safe.
We will keep you updated on any changes as the occur.
